There are thousands of families living in flats who would kill to have a garden. There are also hundreds of families that have homes with tiny back yards who dream of having a larger garden to spend time in. If you are blessed with a good sized garden, you should ensure that you and your family are making the most of the space. After all, not every family is as lucky as you are – for some families having a garden to spend time in is just a pipe dream.

As a parent, I believe that outdoor time is crucial for our children’s development, as well as for their health. So I like to make the most of my garden and the space it offers, not just in the warmer months either, I like to use my garden all year around. To encourage you to do the same and make the most out of your outdoor space, below are some tips and ideas.

Separate your yard into zones

A tip that is highly successful when you want to make the most of your outdoor space is to separate it into zones. Instead of having one big area where you try and do everything, separate your yard up. Designate one area as a play space for the children, where their outdoor toys live and where there is a swing set, climbing frame, or trampoline for them to play on. Create another area for relaxing in; this could be designed in a certain style of your choice – one that you find relaxing. Then, design an area of social gatherings and eating, such as a decked or patioed area that you can place seating on, and so on.

Add a covered area

Covered areas that are outdoors are becoming more and more popular. To get year-round use out of your garden, you need to add a covered area to it. This could simply mean adding a roofed area over your outdoor seating, or it could mean adding an entire room, such as a LifeRoom, to your garden. A lot of families are now choosing to add covered outdoor areas to their homes so that they and their children are able to spend time outside all year around. These types of spaces make spending time outside, even when the weather is cold, much easier and more enjoyable, especially if you add a heating source to the space.

Keep it landscaped all year around

Obviously, if your garden ends up in a mess, you aren’t going to want to spend any time in it. So it’s important to make sure that it’s well looked after throughout the year. If you don’t have time to keep on top of your grass mowing and shrub pruning, consider hiring a gardener to keep your garden in good shape. The last thing you want is for your garden to become a jungle so that come spring you have to spend days getting it back into shape.

Want to make the most of your back garden? Then take note of the tips and suggestions above, and you can do.
