The loss of a child is a devastating experience for parents and loved ones – be it from miscarriage, still birth, SIDs, disease or a tragic accident. Nothing in the world can prepare you for it and the aftermath is difficult.

Essential oils are a great tool for dealing with the trauma and grief. They can be used to ease both emotional and mental pain, and any physical pain that a parent or loved one may be experiencing.

Emotional & Mental Pain

Many parents find emotional pain to be a lot worse than any physical pain that may be occurring. The following oils can help ease emotional and mental pain. If you have an oil that is not on this list that you find to be uplifting, use it. Try diffusing a few drops in a diffuser (No diffuser? Click here for more ideas to scent your home with essential oils) or inhale directly from the bottle.

  • Arborvitae – Eases anxiety and promotes feelings of peace.
  • Basil – Can ease stress and exhaustion.
  • Black Pepper – Has a spicy aroma; may ease stress and calm anxiety.
  • Frankincense – An oil of all trades, Frankincense can help with feelings of shame.
  • Geranium – A great oil for addressing feelings of loss, grief and abandonment.
  • Lavender – The perfect oil to help ease feelings of stress and anxiety; may help with sleep.
  • Melissa – Can ease feelings of depression and sadness.
  • Rose – A great oil for encouraging emotional healing, compassion and acceptance.
  • Ylang Ylang – A great oil to combat grief and sadness; may help with sleep.

Physical Pain

Whether suffering from a miscarriage, afterpains from a stillbirth, or bruises and scrapes from a traumatic injury, essential oils can help speed the healing process. Application methods can vary per oil, but in general a dilution ratio of 3% (9 drops oil to 10 mL of carrier oil) is a good place to start. Try placing a few drops in a rollerball and filling with carrier oil, or placing in a spray bottle with water to spray larger areas (remember to shake before use).

  • Black Pepper – Useful for combating sore muscles and minor aches and pains. Works well with wintergreen.
  • Clary Sage – May help intensify contractions during child labor; useful during miscarriages and stillbirth to speed up the process. Click here for my full recipe of labor massage oil.
  • Frankincense – Can be used for bruising, skin irritation, and headaches.
  • Helichyrsum – Can treat burns, skin irritations and help prevent tissue scarring.
  • Lavender – Useful for treating minor burns, cuts, scrapes and bruises.
  • Peppermint – Great for burns, aches and pains, headaches and
  • Tea Tree (Melalueca) – An oil of all trades, its antifungal, antiviral and antiseptic propertist make it great for treating skin problems such as burns, cuts and scars.
  • Wintergreen – Use to combat sore muscles, and aches and pains.

Essential oils can be a great tool in easing both the physical and emotional pain of losing a child – but remember that they are just that – a tool. I encourage you seek out social support whether it be in the form of group meetings, individual or group therapy, family or friends, or even an online support group (facebook is great for this!).

Healing takes time – a lot of time, but it does happen. You may always remember and mourn your loss but it does get easier.

This is amazing! Mental stress has become the sole cause of every disease and problems recently. It is much more painful and stressful and it takes a lifetime to heal. The article that you have shared is valuable. And the encouragement that you gave is truly helpful.
