The definition of self-reliance is just that; not relying on the resources of others, but rather, relying on yourself to get things done. In a volatile business world and different things going on in the world, there has never been a better time to become more self-reliant. We never know what will happen a couple of weeks or months down the line. So being able to take care of ourselves and our family, and not rely on others, is a great way to make sure that we can live well in the future. There are many ways in which we can be more self-reliant. So if you’re not sure where to start, I’ll give you a few ideas. It can be quite a scary sounding thing. But with some time and planning, it doesn’t have to be intimidating or scary. Being self-reliant is important, so read on.

One of the first things that people think of when it comes to being self-reliant is cooking from scratch, growing your own food, and making a lot of the things that you need yourself. These are all great ways to get into being more self-reliant. But doing it all at once can be overwhelming, so taking it all one step at a time is a good idea. You could start by choosing to grow one or two things in your home or garden. Even making a small herb garden on your kitchen windowsill can be a good way to get started. Just try a few things, choose seeds that will be growing in the right season and go from there. It can be fun to grow your own things, and it is great to get the kids involved with it too.

There are lots of other things that you can make at home too. Being vegan, dairy is out for us, so it means using things like nut milk instead. This is something easy to make yourself at home. All you need to do is soak your nuts of choice overnight, then rinse, blend, and then strain with a cheesecloth or muslin cloth. Things like that mean you can be much more reliant on yourself, rather than the grocery store or farmers. The best way to start with this kind of thing could be by trying out a week where you don’t eat out or don’t buy anything to eat that has been prepared already. Have a week cooking from scratch, if you don’t already, and you’ll acquire new skills and a new love of food. All of which can stand you in good stead if there is ever a time when you can’t get to the store, or you grow your own veggies, for example.

I think that making your own laundry detergent and cleaners are a great way to become self-reliant too. Plus, they won’t be full of chemicals that are not only harmful to you but to the environment. Getting a store of essential oils can be a good way to make you own cleaning products and detergents. The added benefit is that they can double up as natural medicine for your family too. Which again, helps you all to be more self-reliant. If you don’t need to rely on a doctor to help you heal, then it means much more freedom, particularly financially.

Speaking of financial freedom, being able to work for yourself at home, can be a good way to get on the road to self-reliance. You will have the pressure of customers essentially, but how your business grows will depend on you and you alone. You won’t have an employer that you have to report to, and it can mean a big difference to safe you feel in your employment. There are several ways that you can work for yourself from home too. To start with, it might seem like quite a large step. So it might be best to just look for a few ways to generate an extra income from home. Here are a few examples that are pretty straightforward.

Surveys

Taking part in online surveys is an easy way to make some extra money. It might not earn you big bucks, but it can all help and does add up. You could look at a site like https://surveyssay.com to get an idea of where the best places to look for these kinds of surveys are. Then just go from there. It is a good way for a stay-at-home parent to make some extra money during nap time, for example.

Use Your Home

There are a lot of ways that your home can work for you, in order to generate an extra income. You could use a site like https://www.airbnb.co.uk to market your home and rent out a spare room, for example. You could also use the space that you have in your front yard to advertise things. Certain companies will pay pretty good money for ‘renting’ that space for one of their signs or boards. So that is a simple way to make some money each month, with actually doing very little.

Start a Website

If you have a hobby or a passion, then why not write about it? We all have a voice so why can’t yours be heard? From setting up your own website, you can then create a blog and go from there. Brands could work with you or want to advertise with you, so it is possible to make money from it.

Manage Social Media

Social media is a massive thing for businesses. Smaller businesses need to be doing it but often don’t have the time. So working as a social media manager can be a good way to generate income. Tweeting, sharing pictures, and responding to comments from the comfort of your own home isn’t too bad, right?

I hope that this has given you just a few small ideas about how you can be more self-reliant. Just make a few changes at a time, and I’m pretty sure you’ll get so much satisfaction from it when you do.
