As parents, we know how important keeping our kids active is, and how crucial it is that they enjoy exercise. A great way to encourage kids to stay active is by enrolling them in a local sports team. If however, there aren’t any sports teams in your area that are suitable, perhaps you could consider starting one. If there was a sport that you played as a child, such as football, and your kids love it too, but there’s no team, why not start one? Surely, starting a kid’s sports team can’t be that hard, can it?

Want to know how to start a children’s sports team in your local area? Have a read of the below tips and pieces of advice.

Get help

If you’re going to start a kid’s sports team, you can’t go it alone. You’re going to need help. So, why not get in touch with some other local parents and see whether they would like to get involved with running a sports team. The chances are that there are lots of other parents in the area who wish that there was a suitable sports team for their kids, so they should be willing to help out. If not, why not see if there are any students looking to build their experience in the kid’s coaching field?

Make a plan

Once you’ve got enough people on board to help out, the next step is to make a plan for how you will run the team. Ideally, you need to set aside one or two evenings a week for team practices, as well as one day on the weekend for matches. It’s also a good idea to register your team in any local leagues so that they have regular matches to play in. Matches are just as important as practices, as they allow kids to play against another team, instead of against their friends.

Consider planning a tournament

If there’s not any tournaments in the local area but lots of teams, consider planning a weekend tournament. Get in touch with some other local teams and see whether they would like to get involved in a local tournament. If the idea is popular, get planning. Believe it or not, planning a sports tournament is much easier than you would think. It’s just a case of getting the games planned out, a trophy ordered from somewhere like Premier Trophies, and the date decided. It’s also a good idea to ensure that there are refreshments on site, to make the day more enjoyable for everyone.

Get a professional-looking kit

Every team needs a smart, professional-looking kit. So, it’s a good idea to ask the parents of the other children what they think about getting a kit. There are various designs and styles to choose from, as well as various price ranges. So, regardless of the size of the budget that you have to work with, you should be able to get a kit for your team.

So, there you have it, everything that you need to know about starting a sports team.
