Giving birth is an intense yet beautiful event. Not only is it the birth of a child, but it’s also the birth of a mother; the birth of parents. And now you’re tasked with bonding and nurturing this tiny human and heal yourself.

Of course, the birth and postpartum experience are amazing times, and you love your little one, but it’s hard. You’re short on sleep, breastfeeding may or may not be going well, your body aches, and you’re stressed. Add to that a flood of pregnancy hormones leaving your body and you might experience a bout of the post partum blues, sadness and anxiety after the birth of your baby.*

After the birth of my son in 2015, this hit me hard. I was exhausted, breast feeding wasn’t go well, and my sleep was terrible. One night sticks in my head shortly after bringing home Ethan. I took an extra long shower and just sobbed and sobbed. I was so stressed out and so tired and at my limit. Luckily, a few days later, after the hormones had finally been flushed from my body, I started to feel better (of course, still tired).

Although the postpartum blues* are totally normal and I expect to experience them again with the birth of my second child, it’s difficult to get through. This time around, I’ve created an uplifting and empowering essential oil room spray to use when I need a mood boost.

*Not to be confused with postpartum depression, a serious mental condition mothers may experience after the birth of their child. If you’re symptoms last for more than a week, are extreme or intense, or you have thoughts of hurting yourself or your baby, please speak with your doctor. You don’t have to suffer alone.

Uplifting Postpartum Room Spray

1/2 Oz Lavender Hydrosole
1/2 Oz Lemon Balm Hydrosole
1/2 Oz Clary Sage Hydrosole
1/2 Oz Witch Hazel
2 Oz Glass Spray Bottle

Instructions

Add all ingredients to spray bottle and shake to mix. Spray in air or on bedding and linens to enjoy a quick pick me up.

Alternatively, you can also diffuse the essential oils at a ratio of 2:2:1 drops of Lavender, Lemon Balm and Clary Sage, just diffuse with caution around children under 2.

Hydrosoles are created during the making of essential oils and are also highly beneficial. Due to their unique chemical makeup, there are less safety concerns than essential oils. Since this recipe is likely to be used around newborn babies, I have chosen to use hydrosoles instead of essential oils. For more information, see Using Essential Oils Safely’s guide to hydrosols.

What a great mix of oils. Thanks for the heads up about Hydrosoles. I hadn’t heard of that before, so it’s good to know. One of our favorites is plain old lavender. We love just about anything with lavender in it. 🙂
