Let me tell you a personal story. The other day, we were looking for a new bed. It’s very rare that I ever set foot in a bed shop, with the last time being probably ten years ago! A sign caught my eye as walked through the door. It informed me that mattresses should generally be replaced every eight years. It wasn’t all that surprising, but I hadn’t really taken the time to think about it before. I got wondering…when should I be replacing everything else?

And that’s how we’ve arrived at this point. Here are some interesting tidbits of information about when to change your furnishings.

Mattress

We may as well start with the mattress, considering I just recounted that story for you! Although my experiences suggested eight years, anywhere between eight and ten appears normal. After this, the mattress starts to lose comfort and support, giving it a somewhat lumpy feel.

Pillows

Don’t go waiting ten years to replace your pillows, though! You’re looking at around six months as a general requirement here. This all depends on the pillow itself, though, and how well it has been maintained. It might survive a few years, especially if you’ve invested in a top-quality memory foam material.

Washing Machine

In terms of a washing machine, it’s a little difficult to give an accurate reading. You’re probably looking at about ten years-or-so in terms of replacement. But, it’s a reality that most people don’t replace them until they simply break down. This could happen after five years or fifteen. Who knows?!

Sofas

Your sofa should be able to last quite a long time, despite the pressure you’re putting on it on a daily basis. You’ll start to know when it’s time to swap, which will probably be around the ten-year mark once more. Again, this is dependent on quality and materials.

Carpets

It’s not going to surprise you that this is once again reliant on material quality. A low-quality carpet might only last you a few years. A top-quality one can go on for decades.

How Do I Get Rid Of Them?

Ah, now you’re asking the important questions. A big reason why a lot of people stick with outdated furnishings is because they don’t want to get rid of them. No, I wouldn’t want to try and fit an old mattress in my car either! But, there are a few options at your disposal to help clean up your home.

Firstly, for old furniture like mattresses, rubbish companies will remove it for you. They’ll charge a small fee, but they’ll also help to get it out of your hands and importantly, out of the house.

Or, for furniture that is still usable, you’ve got a few other options. Potentially, you might want to try and sell it online. Another choice is to donate it locally or even trade it in towards the cost of a new one. Some companies will allow this, but only under fairly niche circumstances.

Ultimately, you’ll find plenty of ways to get rid of your old stuff, clearing the way for your new purchases.
